Based on 1986 BBC six-part TV mini-series of the same
title. As a Chicago novelist (Downey) lays, bedridden
and feverish with an extreme case of psioriasis, he
reworks the story of his first novel, The Singing Detective,
in his mind, becoming the title character himself, who's
on pursuit of Nazis in the 1940's... but the battle
he's actually waging, of course, is with his own demons. |
This
is generally considered Denis Potter's best work - and
he is credited as the writer 9 years after his death.
Mind you, given that virtually everything he wrote from
the mid-1970s onwards was the SAME work reworked, he
had to get better. The gorgeous Katie Holmes takes the
fantasy nurse role played originally by the equally
gorgeous Joanne Whalley. Anyone familiar with Potter
will recognize that they are almost doppelgangers in
looks - And that all his TV work had dark, beutiful
women who look very similar. I'm looking forward to
the Bed Bath scene. |
