BLIMEY GUV, '8 MILE' DIRECTOR PICKS 'CRIMSON PETAL' LONDON FLICK

'8 Mile' director Curtis Hanson is in final negotiations to shoot a big-screen adaptation of Michael Faber's Victorian novel 'The Crimson Petal and the White'.

The Columbia Pictures project is being developed as a starring vehicle for Kirsten Dunst, but no deal is in place with the actress.

Set in London during the 1860s, the story centres on a 19-year-old prostitute named Sugar. Her yearning for a better life begins to become a reality when she finds herself the secret mistress of a member of a powerful London family.

'Even though it's a Victorian novel, it has a contemporary sensibility', said Laura Ziskin, who will produce the film. 'It's about a woman who is in many ways ahead of her time. It's a very surprising, very triumphant and very sexy story'.

No writer has yet come on board to adapt the novel, but a scribe is expected shortly and will work closely with Hanson to develop the script. Columbia optioned the screen rights to the novel in October.

Hanson and his producing partner at Deuce Three Prods., Carol Fenelon, are currently developing two projects at Warner Bros. Pictures: one based on crime author George P. Pelecanos' book series about fictional Washington detective Derek Strange; the other, 'Lucky You', a drama set in the high-stakes world of professional poker.

Hanson won an Oscar for writing with Brian Helgeland the screenplay to 'L.A. Confidential', which he also directed and produced.

Is Kirsten sweet enough to play London hooker called Sugar?
