Based
upon the novel, "Mystic River", by Dennis
Lehane...
Three childhood friends, Sean (Bacon), Dave (Robbins)
and Jimmy (Penn) are reunited in Boston 25 years later
when they become linked together in the murder investigation
of Jimmy's oldest daughter, Katie (Rossum). Sean is
a police detective investigating the case (Fishburne
plays his partner), while Dave is a man with psychological
problems caused when he was kidnapped and sexually abused
in 1975 when he was a child, who is now a possible suspect
in Katie's death. Jimmy, meanwhile, is a violent ex-con
seeking to take justice and retribution into his own
hands. (Linney plays Jimmy's wife and Katie's mother.)
Dennis Lehane'swebsite says
"When Jimmy Marcus's daughter is found murdered,
his childhood friend Sean Devine is assigned to the
case. His personal life is unraveling, Sean's investigation
takes him back into a world of violence and pain he
thought he'd left behind. It also puts him on a collision
course with Jimmy Marcus -- a man with his own dark
past who is eager to solve the crime with brutal justice.
And then there is Dave Boyle, a man who hides monstrous
secrets beneath a bland fagade -- secrets his wife,
Celeste, is only beginning to suspect. As the race for
a killer heats up, all are pulled closer toward an abyss
that will force them to face their true selves -- and
will mark them as irrevocably as the past itself has."

In
between lecturing the rest of us with his pre-High School
opinions, Sean Penn found time to make this. Let's be
calm and fair though (unlike Sean and his Hollywood
Lefty Celeb Brigade)... and say any movie directed by
Clint and starring the superb Laura Linney has to be
worth watching. |
